The idea was born from childhood memories growing up on the North Side of Syracuse in the 1970s—an Italian neighborhood filled with families from Naples and Argentina. The streets smelled of fresh bread from the corner bakery and espresso from the cafés where neighbors gathered each afternoon. Doors were rarely locked. Gardens were tended with pride. Everyone knew everyone.
As kids, my best friend Ralphy and I would linger in the local café, bothering the owner for quarters to play Pac-Man or shoot pool while the men played Italian card games and talked for hours. On school mornings we would stop at his grandmother’s house for strong coffee and something sweet before walking to class.
Years later, traveling through the countryside of Tuscany and the seaside towns of Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast deepened that love. There, coffee is not rushed. It is a pause, a conversation, a daily ritual.
